About Sigiriya.
Our incredible food comes in many varieties of colours and flavours. We blend hot Sri Lankan spices with cloves, cardamoms, nutmegs, and peppers which are found in abundance throughout Kandy and Matale Districts of the central region of Sri Lanka.
‘Rice and curry’ are a staple diet for the Sri Lankan people, but the word ‘curry’ is used to describe a multitude of dishes. These can include soups, meats, sea food, lentils, vegetables, sambols, mallums (sauted vegetables), phies (dry style vegetables) and achcharus (pickle).
Furthermore, the basis for some of our delicious desserts include curd, treacle, sweet meats, rice flour, palm treacle and jiggery accompanied by a variety of fruits. It is very easy to find several juicy sweetmeats like Kavum, kokis, Halape, Thalaguli and Wattalapam in Sri Lanka.
At Sigiriya restaurant, it is important for us to pay homage to its namesake, the iconic rocky outcrop, through our food and culture. Sigiriya rock has been known since ancient times as a settlement for Buddhist monks.
It is a well-planned monastic complex that includes cave temples, bathing pools, lovely ponds, and Asia’s oldest surviving landscaped gardens. Today, Sigiriya is famous for its fresco’s paintings in the pocket of the rock.
The “lion stairway”, the “mirror wall” and the “water gardens” are its other highlights. Sigiriya was declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1982.
Sigiriya rock is Sri Lanka’s single most dramatic sight, an imposing rock that rises with near vertical walls out of the green scrub jungle of the central plains. Sigiriya is perhaps the most memorable place to visit in the country and our restaurant seeks to celebrate the rich history of this special place by blending Indian and Buddhist traditions through fine food and warm hospitality. This is the Sri Lankan way, come and experience it through us, a little pocket of Sri Lanka in Hale.
